High School Drive Smart Challenge
Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Minneapolis
This 4 week challenge is conducted every spring at area high schools. The students plan out a variety of intervention with the goal to increase seat belt use among their peers. A pre and post seat held check is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The schools are then awarded the Golden Seat Belt award for best over all seat belt use, most improced use rate, and best campaign. In 2008 11 schools completed the challenge all of them saw an increase in their seat belt use rate . The most improved school saw a 30% increase (50% at the start up to 80% at the end). The best over all use rate at 97%. Each school that completed the program received $150 and an award plaque. 2100 High school students were exposed to the Drive Smart messageThe program is funded by IFCK of Minneapolis, MN Dept of Public Safety, AAA Minneapolis, Abra Auto Body.
