Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is among the top ten children’s hospitals in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of American children’s hospitals. This year, the 2009 America's Best Children's Hospitals included an “Honor Roll” of 10 pediatric hospitals in no particular order that ranked in all 10 specialties. Hopkins Children’s is among the ten best.
In the specialties’ rankings, Hopkins Children’s earned high marks in several categories, including number three in Diabetes & Endocrine Disorders, number three in Neurology & Neurosurgery and number four in Urology. Other pediatric specialties ranking in the top ten include Respiratory Disorders (sixth place) Kidney Disorders (seventh), Neonatal Care (ninth), Cancer (ninth) Orthopedics (tenth) and Digestive Disorders (tenth).
This year, the magazine added four pediatric specialties to the rankings: endocrinology, nephrology, urology and orthopedics. According to the magazine, the rankings were determined by weighing a three-part blend of reputation, outcome, and care-related measures such as nursing care, advanced technology, credentialing, and other factors. The hospitals were judged based on a combination of opinions from pediatric specialists and data gathered from the hospitals in a 65-page survey.
Hopkins Children’s is scheduled to move into a new, state-of-the-art facility at the corner of Wolfe and Orleans streets in East Baltimore in the fall of 2011. The modern structure will house emergency, surgical, interventional, critical- and acute-care services for infants and children, and is designed to facilitate improvement in pediatric care, research, and training. This 12-story hospital will have 205 private inpatient rooms, a 45-bed neonatal intensive care unit, a 40-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 10 pediatric surgical suites, and dedicated inpatient and outpatient areas for translational research.
Next month, U.S. News & World Report will release its annual American hospital rankings, a list that The Johns Hopkins Hospital has topped for 18 years in a row. From the time the rankings began in 1990 until 2007, pediatrics appeared as a subspecialty in the annual hospital ranking; Hopkins Children’s consistently ranked number three during that time. Also included on this year’s Honor Roll are Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Children’s Hospital Boston and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
