Community Programs and Events

Program/Event Details:
Swords to Plowshares Northeast (S2PNE) is a non-profit organization (501c3) specializing in gun violence prevention, gun buyback programs, safe gun storage and the transformation of guns into gardening tools and jewelry. Our team has over 10 years’ experience organizing community gun buyback events and collecting data. Building partnerships and coalitions of community and faith-based organizations, law enforcement, municipalities, universities, healthcare facilities and businesses, we have created safe and nonthreatening venues to eliminate unwanted and guns out of homes and off the streets.

S2PNE has overseen over 25-gun buyback events throughout CT and nationwide, yielding the safe return of nearly 1,500 guns including over 50 assault weapons, recovered from individuals or family members with children in the home, behavioral health disorders, depression or suicidal ideation, drug and alcohol use, dementia, perpetrators of domestic violence, and criminals.

Through our mobile forging unit, we have repurposed over 500 guns collected and converted them into gardening tools and jewelry. These tools have been donated to local community gardens and agricultural high schools to harvested food that is turned over to soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and those most in need in our communities.

S2PNE was invited to Washington, DC to host a day-long in-person demonstration and hands-on participation of Transforming Guns into Garden Tools. Members of the House of Representatives, Senators and their staffs, Washington's Bishop attended the event and participated at the forge and Anvil melting and reshaping former weapons that were turned in at gun buyback events.
