Trauma Medical Director – Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Phoenix

Dr. David M. Notrica has been practicing pediatric surgery in Phoenix for the past 15 years. He received his M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery training at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Notrica obtained his fellowship in pediatric surgery at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX.

Dr. Notrica established Arizona’s only ACS verified Level I Trauma Center for pediatric patients at Phoenix Children’s Hospital in 2008 and continues to serve as its Trauma Medical Director. He is co-director of the joint Chest Wall program at Mayo Clinic-Arizona and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He has served as the President of the Medical Staff and Chief of Surgery at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He is a member of multiple professional societies including the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, the Michael E. DeBakey Society, and is a Fellow with both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Surgeons.

His extensive community involvement includes serving as the pediatric representative for the Arizona State Trauma Advisory Board and serving on the planning committee for the Western Pediatric Trauma Conference. He is the Chair of the American Pediatric Surgical Association’s Practice Committee and is a board member of the Arizona Trauma and Acute Care Consortium where he serves as Co-chair for their annual Southwest Trauma & Acute Care Symposiums.

Dr. Notrica actively participates in the education of medical students and helps train surgery residents from various programs in Arizona including Mayo Clinic-Arizona, Phoenix Integrated Surgery Residency, and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. He is an Assistant Professor in the Child Health Department with the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine-Phoenix and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic-Arizona.

Dr. Notrica is an avid researcher and his recent publications have been included in The Journal of Pediatric Surgery, The Journal of Emergency Medicine, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. Dr. Notrica has presented at many national clinical meetings including the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics-Surgical Section, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Notrica has been filmed for several local television segments covering topics ranging from the opening of the Level I Trauma Center at Phoenix Children’s to the prevention of battery ingestion. He has also been featured in two cable television programs: Medical Incredible and Maternity Ward. Dr. Notrica has been listed as a ‘Top Doc’ by Phoenix magazine, has been included in Best Doctors in America® annually since 2005, and has been listed as a ‘Top Doctor’ in U.S. News and World Report consecutively since 2011.
