Principal Investigator, Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Minneapolis (Children's Minnesota)

Dr. Andrew Kiragu is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. He is an Associate of the Children’s Respiratory and Critical Care Specialist’s group and provides pediatric critical care at Children’s of Minnesota and Gillette Children’s Hospital. He is also the Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada and subsequently graduated from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. He served his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Minnesota.

As a pediatric intensivist at Children's of Minnesota and Hennepin Healthcare, two of Minnesota’s premier Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centers, he has considerable expertise in the management of critically injured children particularly those with severe traumatic brain injuries. He is also engaged in injury prevention efforts with and is the site primary investigator of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids Hennepin Healthcare and Children’s of Minnesota sites. In addition to his service on the Injury Free Coalition for Kids National Board he also serves on the boards of Safe Kids Minnesota and the Midwest Injury Prevention Alliance. Nationally, he is also the co-chair of the Injury Control Special Interest Group of the Academic Pediatric Association. He is also a member of the Minnesota Department of Health Brain Injury Interagency Leadership Council and the Minnesota Injury and Violence Prevention Action Coalition. Dr. Kiragu is an active advocate for children at the state and national level and is a Past President of the board of directors of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
