Due to the wide variety of motor vehicle restraint systems and car seats, about 80% of parents incorrectly transport their children. Progress is being made by car manufacturers to make car safety seat installations in their vehicles easier, but the task is still a challenge for most parents and caregivers. The Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Worcester works with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security to educate and assist parents about their cars and their child vehicle restraint systems. Working with the local Police and Fire Departments, Massachusetts State Police, volunteers and UMass Medical School students, bi-weekly checkpoints are held in which parents can bring their car seats to be checked and properly installed by NHTSA certified technicians.
